Eucalyptus, large genus of more than species of shrubs and tall trees of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), native to Australia, Tasmania, and nearby islands. Many species are widely cultivated as shade trees or in forestry plantations for their useful timber.

Growth data of Eucalyptus saligna from plantation experiments in Hawaii and South Africa were analyzed to determined relationship between yield and soil, climatic, and management variables. Detailed investigations were made of growing space, fertilization, and site conditions on tree diameter. The independent variables used were growth age, planting density, nitrogen fertilizer . The main Eucalyptus species used as shiitake substrate are: Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus urophylla. From these, the species E. grandis, E. urophylla, E. saligna are also intensively utilized for pulp and paper production being very common in Brazil (Silva and Santana, ; UFLA, ).

[Roger G Skolmen; Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station (Berkeley, Calif.)] -- Australian provenances of Eucalyptus grandis and E. saligna were compared at four locations on the island of Hawaii to seek seed sources better than those in current use which were introduced earlier.

Performance of Australian provenances of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna in Hawaii. Eleven provenances each of Eucalyptus grandis and E. saligna, representing the complete latitudinal range and a broad altitudinal range of the species, were tested at 4 sites in Hawaii.
